02

Understanding Domestic Violence in North Carolina

In North Carolina, domestic violence includes any act of physical harm, attempted harm, threat, or harassment committed by someone with a personal relationship to the victim — such as a spouse, former spouse, dating partner, parent, or household member.

Common examples include:

Physical assault or injury
Threats of violence or intimidation
Harassment, stalking, or unwanted contact
Destruction of property
Emotional or psychological abuse
03

What Is a 50B Protective Order?

A 50B Protective Order is a court order that restricts an alleged abuser’s contact with the victim and may include:

No-contact or stay-away provisions
Temporary custody or visitation restrictions
Exclusive possession of a shared residence
Prohibition against firearm possession
Temporary support or reimbursement of costs
04

50C Civil No-Contact Orders

If the parties do not have a personal relationship (for example, in cases of stalking, harassment, or unwanted contact from acquaintances or coworkers), the court may issue a 50C Civil No-Contact Order instead.

While 50C orders do not carry criminal penalties, violating them can still result in arrest and serious consequences.
